Lynn's Lambrequins

Not many home owners are daring enough to commission lambrequines.

Lambrequins are cornices that frame the window on the sides as well as on the top.

The face fabric is a print and the sides are upholstered with a rust chenille.

Notice how the rust chenille is also covering the inside of the lambrequins legs.
You can see it there on the right.
The rust colored fabric is a nice compliment on the gold walls. It really helps lift and separate the lambrequins from the walls.

We had to measure for a perfect fit.
It needed to touch the chair rail.

Jackie, the interior designer who hired me to build and cover the lambrequins currently resides in Williamsburg, VA and owns a furniture and design store there.

Bridging the Gap Between Drapery Panels and Matchstick Blindes

Sandra had a great idea to bridge the disunity between her reeded roman blinds and her new custom drapery panels.

She had me add some of the fabric from the panels

as a boarder on the blind installed on the door.

I also lined the blinds for privacy.

Great idea Sandra!

The Right Fabric and Lining to Create a Beautiful Shade

Shape Up and Get Curves without the Bulk

Create a softer finish.

Getting the right shape is so important. If your room has wide windows or very straight lines you can create visual interest by using a shapely cornice.

Trying to cut cost?
A cornice is the way to go if you have a fabric that's very expensive.
Most cornices take about 2 yards

Cream Dupioni Silk and Tapestry

We created these hard wood cornices and covered them in a cream colored Dupioni Silk. At the bottom we added a much heavier tapestry to add visual balance. Then we mounted them 19feet up.

The long point on the cornice is 42". The short point 26" and the tails measure 52"

Okay, here's a tip as to how we managed to hang these without scaffolding. We cut wholes under the flagged pieces at the top of the large cornice, used two 20 foot extension ladders, grabbed that baby and carried it up. After placing it on angle irons that we put up earlier we reached through the whole and tightened the screws.

When the room is this large and the ceiling height measures 20 feet you need large statement pieces. In order to keep the statement pieces from being so bold as to seem as though they pop off the wall you can tone down the effect by using a soft neutral colored fabric. Then add a little bit of detail with an accent fabric.

Shaped Cornices

One of my favorite jobs in the workroom is creating shaped cornices.

The designer, Noelle Myers wanted a tight fit between the cabinets. She also wanted a small notched cut in the upper left corner. We added small contrast welt in green and then glued on tiny yellow box pleats. Go on click the picture and check out the details.

We created a single arched cornice for the window over the kitchen counter and a double arch for the window in the family room.

Larger than Usual

You can see how large the balloons on this shade are when you compare them to my size.

Sometimes balloon shades can be very intrusive. Selecting the right size balloon makes all the difference in great window treatment design. Usually a designer would opt to have 3 balloons on this window.

The room was huge and there were

two 44 inch windows .

The folds on the roman shades below are

larger than usual too.

There were 6 shades in this room and we didn't want the polka dots to appear the dominate the project so we made the folds larger and added a trim banding to draw attention away from what seemed to be million's of little dots.

The shades were operable, so the more you pull them up the more volume you have at the top of the window.

I wish I took a picture of them at their highest point to show you how nice they looked.

Silk and Viscose

I knew we would find it, the perfect fabric, the right color and the perfect "hand" (hand is a term used in the design industry to articulate how textiles feel and handle).

The fabric is a combination, 20% Silk and 80% Viscose. Viscose is a man made fiber processed from wood pulp. It falls somewhere in between a synthetic and a natural fiber. Viscose breathes like cotton and is soft to the touch. It adds stability and softness to silk.

Viscose is also helpful because it allows me to manipulate and handle the fabric. Again the term "hand".

The hand featured in this photo is that of the homeowner :-).

We knew we had the right fabric so we moved forward with the Kingston Valance and side panels over paper shades.

Later we added sheers.

The Drapery Shop offers this fabric in more than 60 colors.

It retails for $39.00 per yard.

Creativity with an Exacto Knife.

I enjoy the creativity I'm allowed to unleash in the workroom.The cornice below was created using an exacto knife to outline the floral pattern. Then trim was glued to check the frayed edges and add a slight outline to the bottom of the design.

I call this type of cornice, Miss Barbara. Named after the client, of course. She wanted a simple cornice but my "creative juices" began to flow.

Roman Panels?

The designer wanted me to create what he called roman panels. "Roman Panels", I asked. "Yes, Miss Mary you know, roman panels". He emailed me a picture, gave me the specs and I got to work.

He picked up the panels, hung them and sent me

pictures of my work.

Usually we install most of the drapery treatments we make.

The chairs around this dining set are nice. I wish he would have included them in the photo. I seem to have a chair fetish. I'm definitely going to incorporate upholstery in my service package.

Squire Pole Swag

The Squire Swag has only 2 swag pleats. The bottom of the swag is cut to be longer and the horns shorter than other swag treatments. Using a greater distance between the long and short point is more dramatic.

This is one of my favorites. I think it's Pretty.

Suede Butterflies, Knotted Rope and Ballroom Panels.

The Butterfly pleat is becoming more popular. Really, it's just the pinched pleat tacked 1 1/2 inches from the top.

Roman Shades in a Historic DC home.

Interior designer Christine VanMilder Jones of Richmond Virginia commissioned The Drapery Shop to create roman shades. The shades were installed in a historic NW DC home.

The moldings around the windows must be about 100 years old. Still beautiful!

100 year old millwork with layers of paint makes fitting an inside mounted shade a bit tricky.

The Austrian Shade Deserves Another Chance

It's not likely that you'll see many Austrian Shades.

You may have to visit Embassy Row in Washington, DC.

I made this Austrian Shade using 2 times fullness. The standard fullness is 3 times the length. I wanted to use what I had and study the effects.

What impresses me about the Austrian

is it's ability to give you more privacy than a sheer curtain and still allow light to fill the room.

At night I like to raise the shades and gaze at the stars before falling asleep and in the morning waking up with the rising sun.

Yes, there are occasions when I draw the

drapery panels and sleep in.

Choosing Blue?

We couldn't find the right blue and cream striped fabric.

So to create the stripe we ordered two different fabrics

and sewed them together.

I love this entire room.

It's blue faux painted walls.

The chandelier with the crystal leaves.

The inverted pleat drapery panels.

The blue paint under the chair rail.

And the sheers

that simply keep the room looking clean and crisp.

P.S. You must know
not all faux artist are this good.

Send Me Your Remenants

I love when my clients tell me to take the scraps and make a few pillows.

Some pillows like the round bolster and the gold boxed pillow need to be tailored.

When making pillows to be used on leather furniture consider using suede on the back. This will keep the pillows from slipping.

With others Mix and Match the Fabrics and Trim and just have Fun!

I truly regret that I haven't taken pictures of all of the neat pillows I've created over the years.

Let's Talk about the Small Stuff

This window treatment was Simply Southern. I'd like to share with you the small stuff that made the big picture so pretty.

First of all this is a very soft satin. The leafy floral design is printed on the fabric.

Using satin allowed me to pull the rosette tieback
tight without pinching and puckering the drape.

The rosette is highlighted by it's placement

just beneath the light source.

This semi-sheer fabric still allows light to enter the room.

What to do with Your Ready Made Curtains?

How about a do-over!

On occasion I'll run into a client who absolutely loves the print on her ready made curtains or panels. The one draw back is that it is lacking
style and creativity.

We used the stripe from the valances in the dining area to create the piping and ties for this

Wow, I guess we combined several styles to bring this one to life.

I call this the Mickey Valance because the 1st person I made this for was named Mickey.

We didn't make the sheers. In another post I'll show you the difference between custom and ready made sheers.

Mickey found a ready-made valance for $1.00 at the Home Depot. She liked the shape so we copied it.

Do you like the pillows? I like the bright cream that Mickey chose to have us put in the center of the pillow.

Shades of Blue - Shades of Green

This is a Roman Shade. When it is down, completely covering the window it is flat. You pull the cords and it pleats as it rises. The boxed pleated valance and the shade were
commissioned by interior designer Leatha Robinson.

Sheared Balloon Shades are often very intrusive. A large bright room suits them well.

This is a Hobbled or Soft Fold Roman Shade. Even when the shade is down completely, covering the window you will see the soft folds.

This Client in Oak Hill Virginia has opened her home as a Bed and Breakfast.

This charming home is filled with beautiful toiles, lots of wallpaper and really pretty fabrics.

The fabric was custom designed by the client. The art is done on a computer program and then sent to the fabric printer in North Carolina

The Drapery Shop made the canopy, window treatments, headboard and bedding.

The Same - Yet Different

These 3 window Valances are the same, yet different. Each home has it's particular style, so each window treatment must meet the clients taste and objectives.

The goal was to create something Pretty and to not block much light.

Each client like swags but wanted to move away from the traditional standards.

Welcome to "The Drapery Shop", a full service drapery workroom that's open to the public. From time to time I will feature actual jobs we've done This design is one I creatred for a client that wanted a window treatment that didn't block out the morning sun. I came up with these valances that would tie in the kitchen and familyroom. Since the walls were a warm Tuscan gold the Chili Pepper fabric added additional warmth. I loved the results and want to share our work with you.... Enjoy.
